Opened in 1998, we named the Restaurant after Stefano’s the home town. Sasso Marconi is a small town just outside Bologna in the Emilia Romagna Region of Italy. Emilia Romagna has a rich culinary tradition and is considered by many Italians to be the heart of  Italian cooking; Bologna is famous for its fresh egg pasta, Tortellini and tagliatelle being just a couple of their key pasta dishes. Stefano uses specially imported Italian eggs in his fresh pasta giving it great colour and extra flavour.

Also in the Emilia Romagna Region, Parma produces the world famous Parma Ham. All pork products play such an important role this Region’s cuisine: Mortadella, sausage and pancetta to name just a few, which is why you will see them strongly represented on our menu.

Another town in Emilia Romagna, Reggio Emilia is home to the wonderful Grana Padana Parmesan cheese. Make sure you try some freshly grated on your pasta/risotto dishes, it adds another dimension to the flavour.

Modena, whilst being where the fabulous Ferrari produce their cars is also where Balsamic vinegar is produced and Stefano not only uses it in his salad dressings but often features it as a key balancing ingredient in his dishes.

Head Chef Stefano LancellottiHEAD CHEF

After many years in the restaurant industry in Italy, Stefano opened Sasso Restaurant with his wife, Sara Ferguson, and father-in-law Brian Ferguson in 1998. Stefano’s passions are food, wine and football although not necessarily in that order!

Domenico PonzianiMANAGER

Domenico, originally from Umbria in Italy, took over from Sara when she stopped managing Sasso to have her son Nico, in 2006 and has been with us ever since! Domenico is a well-known and beloved figure in Harrogate having managed restaurants for over 25 years. Domenico enjoys spending time with his two grandsons and so we are reluctantly letting him spend less time in the restaurant to spend more time with them!

Gabriel

MANAGER

Gabriel has worked at Sasso for many years, he took a break recently but we are so happy that he is back with us, now as Restaurant Manager at Sasso. Gabriel is originally from Uruguay but spent some time in Miami gaining solid experience in restaurants, before coming to the UK and is an accomplished mixologist and wine connoisseur.

Sarah Hardcastle - Deputy ManagerDEPUTY MANAGER

Born and raised in Harrogate, Sarah started coming to eat with us with her mum when she was just a little girl. Roll on the years and after working in Rudding Park, Van Zellars and Goldsborough Hall we are lucky enough to have her as our Deputy Manager since 2018. Sarah has also found time along the way to complete her WSET levels 1 and 2 as Sommelier. When Sarah does have free time she is more often than not doing continuing with her passion for food and drink by doing  ‘research’ eating out!!

Karim Mellouki Head ChefHEAD CHEF

Karim joined us in 2018 and we are so glad to have this talented chef on our team. Originally from Morocco, Karim spent over twenty years working as a chef in Italy before coming to the UK. He is an experienced and meticulous chef with a passion for food. Karim is also a Patisserie Chef and you can often see his creations in Caffe Marconi!

When he isn’t hard at work, Karim enjoys spending time with his growing family.

Matt Dignam Second ChefSECOND CHEF

Matt joined us in 2018 and although young, has already many years’ experience in catering with time working in the kitchen at Rudding Park and the Ivy, Harrogate. Under Stefano and Karim’s careful guidance and teaching Matt is making great progress and we are thrilled he has moved up the ranks to become our second chef.

The youngest member of our team, we are so proud of Bashar who joined us in 2018 as Assistant Chef. Bashar continues to grow and progress in the Sasso kitchen and is a key part of the team working on desserts and starters.
